Poster Research Analysis
Before making our own movie poster, we must first research other posters on theatrical released and successful horror films. In doing this we will take inspiration and use some of their techniques to make our own effective and successful movie poster for the film trailer we will be making ourselves.
This is the theatrical poster for the film Halloween, the first film in the Halloween franchise.
The poster is comprised of a complete black background with the single image of a hand holding a knife in what looks like a stabbing motion.
The blade itself gives the connotations of fear due the the sharpness of the blade shown by its clean silver colour and gleam right on the tip of the weapon. The image is blurred behind the main image. The blurred versions of the image all connect to create a pumpkin-like face out of the hand and knife. This pumpkin-like face keeps in line with the Halloween theme of the film and poster.
The halloween-like face created by the blurred images create a mask like image which could reference the killer of the film wearing a mask to conceal his identity.

This is the theatrical poster for the horror film 'The Possession'. This poster includes an image of presumably the main character or the victim of the film with a hand coming out of her mouth and grabbing her face. The image itself is against a white background. The white colour gives the connotations of purity and innocence, this is in contrast with the image itself which invokes the connotations of fear. The hand coming out of the girls mouth is very dark and almost black in places and the hand itself is coming out from an abnormal place which continues to invoke fear due to its abnormality.
The hand grabbing the face and coming from the inside of the girl hints towards the films narrative and title 'The Possession' as the fact its coming from inside her could indicate another being taking over her body.

This is the theatrical poster of the film 'The Cabin in the Woods'. This film poster contains a single main image against a white background with some trees faded in as well as the cabin referenced in the title. the cabin is the main focus of the poster and is shown in almost a 'Rubiks cube' like fashion. This could indicate that a mystery lies behind the cabin or some sort of puzzle, this is also indicated by the text which mentions, 'You think you now the story'.
The white background give the connotations of freedom while the grey/black cabin gives the connotations of fear and entrapment in complete contrast. The cabin being the only dark image on the poster means that it could also indicate something bad about the cabin or something that resides within the cabin.
